"People say that what we're seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. What we seek is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane have resonance within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel that rapture of being alive".

                Joseph Campbell

The Temagami Experience gives you rare and valuable opportunities to learn. As you build community, you learn about group dynamics, group process and balance. You learn about yourself as both leader and community member. And you learn how to build trust; share openly and sensitively; seek mutual goals; and provide feedback in a fast-paced world that no longer teaches these things.

You start off as a group of individuals and then work hard to become something greater – an ideal community. There is no hierarchy, so nobody has power over another. A trusting environment is created where you can test your skills and not be worried about failure. You receive supportive, specific feedback on your effectiveness as a community member. What you learn about community in Temagami can be seamlessly transferred to communities back home.

People who come to Temagami are on a journey. They are often at a transition point in their lives, perhaps starting a new job, ending or beginning a relationship, leaving school or retiring. They seek different things. Some want the opportunity to step back and ask important questions like: ‘who am I now?’ or ‘what do I need?’ Some come for the sanctity of the outdoors, to be at peace in nature and to allow nature to be their teacher. Some look for adventure, a chance to challenge or test themselves. Some wish to find the power they have lost in their lives. Each person’s Temagami Experience is unique.

You take part in activities that touch the heart of native indigenous peoples and their traditions. Wisdom gained through rituals such as the drum journey, sweat lodge, long dance and vision quest is applied to present-day life. Many participants develop a closer connection to their own spirituality. Temagami is not a church, but spirit roams in the air, stars and water. People spending 50 or 60 hours per week at work sometimes feel they have lost their sense of self. Some find Temagami a haven in which they are able to slow down the pace, contact the spirit and communicate deeply to rediscover themselves.

By telling no one your name, occupation or history, you have an extraordinary opportunity to stand back and have people see you as you are. You step away from your real life environment, in which you are always connected to role, job, family ties and history, to look at yourself unburdened by perceptions of who you should be.
You have the unimaginable chance – both alone and in the community –
to ‘re-vision’ your life goals.
For many, it really is the chance of a lifetime.
